Thoughtful Fallacies?

In Media on September 11, 2010 at 2:13 am
This blog was a response to the New York Times highlighting a comment with a logical fallacy.
Why is the Times highlighting comments which blame the economic collapse solely on a “government induced housing bubble?” In a complex world, the endorsement of such sophistry perpetuates a “blame the government” myth.

Thousands of individual decisions, an organizational culture of support, and over-riding values of greed and avarice were all a part of creating the recession. True, government played a role. But to over-simplify and point the finger of blame at a sole cause for the recession is commiting the fallacy of oversimplification. I am surprised to see the Times highlighting fallacies in argument construction as “thoughtful and interesting.”
